Welcoming Baby Number 2
A Relaxed Family Photoshoot in Exeter & East Devon
One of the biggest privileges of my job is when families return to me.
There’s something really special about seeing a family again, this time with a new little person in their arms.
Recently, I had a session with a lovely family from East Devon, who first came to me for newborn photos of their first baby… and returned this time with baby number two.
And as always, there was one very important person in the room who had changed roles overnight:
Big Sister.
A Big Change for a Small Person
For older siblings, the arrival of a new baby is huge.
Everything shifts:
Attention suddenly feels divided
Emotions can be unpredictable
And they’re trying to figure out their new place in the family
So during family photoshoots like this, my focus isn’t just on the newborn.
It’s on helping the older sibling feel:
Included
Important
Completely part of the experience
Because that’s where the most meaningful photos come from.
There’s No Pressure for “Perfect Behaviour”
One of the first things I always say to parents is this:
Your children don’t need to perform.
If your toddler is shy, unsure, energetic, or a little overwhelmed, that’s completely normal.
I never expect older siblings to sit still or behave in a certain way.
Instead, I gently work with them at their level.
Sometimes that means:
Taking breaks
Letting them explore
Involving them in small, fun moments
Or simply letting them observe until they feel ready
Everything is led by them, not forced by the camera.
Making Big Brother or Sister Feel Included
During a family photography session in Exeter or East Devon, I always make space for the older sibling to feel part of the experience.
That might look like:
Holding baby with support
Sitting close for natural cuddles
Gentle games or interaction
Or quiet moments just observing their new sibling
There’s no set formula because every child is different.
The goal is always the same though:
They should feel just as important in the story as the new baby.
When It All Comes Together Naturally
The most beautiful moments often happen when nobody is trying too hard.
A soft cuddle.
A curious look.
A hand resting on baby’s head.
A giggle in between moments of stillness.
These aren’t posed.
They’re real.
And they only happen when children feel relaxed and included—not directed or pressured.
Why Returning Families Are So Special
When families come back for a second baby, the dynamic feels familiar but also beautifully different.
You already know the process.
You already trust the experience.
And that trust allows everyone to relax a little more.
It also means I get to see your story unfold over time, which is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
A Relaxed Family Photography Experience in Exeter & East Devon
Whether it’s your first baby or your third, sessions are always:
Calm
Unhurried
Baby-led
And adapted to your children on the day
There is no expectation for perfection, just space for your family to be together as you are right now.
For Mums Who Worry About Siblings
If you’re reading this and thinking:
“I’m not sure how my toddler will cope with a new baby photoshoot…”
That’s completely normal.
Most parents feel the same way.
But with time, patience, and a relaxed approach, siblings often surprise everyone—especially when they’re not being asked to “perform”.
