What to Wear for a Newborn Photoshoot in Exeter & East Devon
(Without Overthinking It)
One of the biggest worries parents have before their session is:
“What should we wear?”
And usually followed quickly by:
“What if we get it wrong?”
If that’s you, you’re not alone.
But the good news is…
for a relaxed, natural newborn photoshoot, it’s actually much simpler than you think.
First Things First. You Don’t Need to Get This Perfect
This isn’t about perfectly styled outfits or matching everything exactly.
In fact, the more relaxed and natural you keep things, the better your photos will feel.
You don’t need to buy anything new.
You don’t need to stress.
You just need to feel comfortable.
Think “Complement”, Not Match
Instead of everyone wearing the same colour, aim for tones that work well together.
For example:
Soft neutrals (creams, whites, beige)
Gentle earthy tones
Muted pastels
These photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it should be, on your baby and your connection as a family.
Avoid Anything That Distracts
The only real “rules” are simple:
No large logos
No bold graphics
Avoid very bright or clashing colours and/or patterns.
These can pull attention away from the moment and date your photos over time.
Comfort Matters More Than Style
If you’re uncomfortable, it shows.
Choose clothes that:
You can sit and move in easily
Feel like you
Don’t need adjusting every two minutes
This is especially important for mums. You’ve just had a baby, and this is not the time for restrictive outfits.
Dressing for the Season (Or Not)
If you love the idea of seasonal photos, you can absolutely reflect that:
Cosy knits in winter
Lighter fabrics in summer
But if you’d prefer images that feel timeless all year round, stick to soft, neutral tones.
There’s no right or wrong, just what feels right for you.
What About Baby?
Keep it simple.
Your baby doesn’t need lots of outfits, often the most beautiful images are the most minimal. I also have a small collection of goregous outfits and wraps you are welcome to use for your little one.
Soft, neutral pieces that keep everything feeling natural and timeless.
And Dad… Keep It Easy
Dads don’t need to overthink it either.
Simple works best:
Plain t-shirts
Neutral shirts
Soft jumpers
Nothing too structured, nothing too formal.
The more relaxed everyone feels, the better the session flows.
You’ll Have Guidance Before Your Session
You won’t be left figuring this out on your own.
Before your session, you’ll receive a prep guide with everything you need to know, so you can feel confident and prepared without second guessing.
This Isn’t About Perfect Outfits
It’s about how it feels.
When you look back at your photos, you won’t be thinking about what you wore.
You’ll be noticing:
How tiny your baby was
How you held them
How that moment felt
